Summary

Every piece of content in Notion is a block — text, headings, bullet points, images, to-dos, code snippets, embeds, databases, and more. The slash command (/) is the universal way to insert any block type. You can drag blocks to reorder them using the six-dot handle that appears on the left when you hover.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Step 1

    Position your cursor

Click on an empty line in your Notion page where you want to insert a new block. A + icon may appear on the left — you can also click that.

  2. Step 2

    Open the block menu

Type / (forward slash). The block menu opens, showing recently used blocks and a search field.

  3. Step 3

Search and select a block type

Start typing the block name — for example, 'heading 1', 'bullet', 'image', 'to-do', or 'code'. The list filters as you type. Press Enter or click a result to insert the block.

  4. Step 4

    Add content to the block

Type your content directly in the new block. For media blocks like images, a file picker or URL field appears instead.

  5. Step 5

    Reorder blocks by dragging

Hover over any block to reveal the six-dot drag handle on the left. Click and drag it to move the block to a new position in the page.

Why this matters

You're building out a Notion page — a project brief, a meeting note, a wiki article — and you want to add a checklist, a table, or an image, but you can't work out how to insert anything other than plain text.

Troubleshooting

  • The slash menu is not appearing

Make sure you are in edit mode on the page. If you are viewing a page without edit access, the slash command will not work. Click Edit at the top right if available.

  • I accidentally created the wrong block type

Click the six-dot handle on the left of the block, choose Turn into, and select the correct block type.

Frequently asked questions

  • How many block types does Notion have?

Notion has over 50 block types including basic text, headings, lists, media (images, video, files), embeds (YouTube, Figma, Google Maps), databases, and interactive blocks like buttons and synced blocks.

  • Can I duplicate a block?

Yes. Click the six-dot handle on the left of the block, then choose Duplicate. The block and all its content are copied immediately below.
