Summary

Teams in Linear keep issues, cycles, workflows, and notifications separate for each group of people. Creating one takes a name and an identifier prefix, so work for a new group does not mix with existing issues.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Step 1

    Start from Join a team

Open your workspace and look at the sidebar under **Your teams**. Click **Join a team** to open the **Create a new team** page, which says it manages separate cycles, workflows, and notifications.

  2. Step 2

    Name the team

On the **Create a new team** page, click the **Icon & Name** field and type the team name, such as Marketing. The **Choose icon** button next to it lets you pick an icon if you want one.

  3. Step 3

    Set the identifier

Check the **Identifier** field, which is used as a prefix for team issues. Linear suggested MAR after the name was typed, and you can replace it with your own prefix such as MKT.

  4. Step 4

    Create the team

Leave the other settings as they are. **Parent team** and **Change team access** are marked **Available on Business**, and the timezone is already filled in. Click **Create team** at the bottom of the form.

  5. Step 5

    See the new team

Linear opens the new team's overview page. Look under **Your teams** in the sidebar to see **Marketing** listed next to your existing team, with links such as **Home**, **Issues**, **Projects**, and **Views**.

Why this matters

You have one team in your workspace, but a new group needs its own issues and workflow. Creating a dedicated team gives that group its own issue prefix and overview page, so its work stays apart from everyone else's.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the identifier for?

It is used as a prefix for team issues. The form gives the example ENG-123, so a prefix of MKT gives issues numbered MKT-123 style.

  • Where does the new team appear?

Under Your teams in the sidebar, next to the teams you already have, and Linear opens its overview page right after you create it.
