Summary

A Kanban view shows each record as a card and groups the cards into stacks based on a single select field. It gives you a drag-friendly board for tracking work without changing your underlying table.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Step 1

    Open the create menu

Open your base and go to the table that holds your records. In the views list on the left, click **Create new...** to see the view types you can add. Your existing views, such as **Grid view**, stay where they are.

  2. Step 2

    Choose the Kanban view type

In the menu, click **Kanban**. The list also offers **Grid**, **Calendar**, **Gallery**, **List** and **Form**. Choosing Kanban opens the dialog for naming your new view.

  3. Step 3

    Name the view

Click the **Update view name** box and type a name that describes the board, for example Task board. The dialog also shows **Collaborative** and **Personal** options under **Who can edit**; the capture left the default **Collaborative** selected.

  4. Step 4

    Create the view

Click **Create new view**. The new view appears in the views list under the name you chose and opens straight away.

  5. Step 5

    Pick the stacking field

A dialog asks which field Airtable should use to stack your records. Select **Status** so each Status option becomes its own stack. The dialog also lists **Assignee** as a choice, plus options to create a new field.

  6. Step 6

    Confirm the stacking field

Click **Done** to apply your choice. The toolbar now shows **Stacked by Status**, and your records appear as cards on the board.

  7. Step 7

    Review your kanban board

Check the stacks: **Todo** holds Launch checklist and **In progress** holds Review pricing page, while **Done** shows no records. Records with no Status value sit together in **Uncategorized**, shown as **Unnamed record** cards when they have no name.

Why this matters

You have a table of tasks with a Status field, and scanning rows in a grid makes it hard to see what is waiting and what is moving. A kanban board stacks the same records by Status so progress is visible at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which field does a kanban board stack records by?

The stacking dialog offered Assignee and Status, plus options to create a new Single select or User field. In this walkthrough Status was selected, so the toolbar reads Stacked by Status.

  • Does creating a kanban view change my other views?

No. The new view is added to the views list next to Grid view and the others, and your existing views stay in the list.
