Summary
Google Docs can change the case of selected text without retyping it. The Capitalization options sit inside the Format menu and work on any selection, from a single word to a whole line.
Step-by-step guide
Step 1
Select the text to change
Select the words whose case you want to change. Drag across the line with your mouse, or click at the end of the line and extend the selection back to its start. The selected text is highlighted.
Step 2
Open the Format menu
With the text still selected, click **Format** in the menu bar above the page. A long menu opens with formatting options for text, paragraphs, columns and more.
Step 3
Point to Text
Point to **Text** at the top of the Format menu. A submenu opens beside it with options such as **Bold**, **Italic**, **Underline** and **Strikethrough**, plus **Size** and **Capitalization** at the bottom.
Step 4
Open Capitalization
Move down the submenu and point to **Capitalization**. A third list opens to the right with three choices: **lowercase**, **UPPERCASE** and **Title Case**.
Step 5
Choose UPPERCASE
Click **UPPERCASE** to turn every letter in your selection into a capital. Pick **lowercase** instead for all small letters, or **Title Case** to capitalise the first letter of each word.
Step 6
Check the result
Click an empty area of the page to clear the selection. The line now shows in capitals, and the text you did not select is unchanged. To try another style, select the line again and repeat the steps.
Why this matters
You typed a heading in lowercase, or pasted a title that came through in the wrong case. Instead of deleting and retyping it, you change the case in a few clicks and keep the rest of the document exactly as you wrote it.
